Here is something lighthearted but nevertheless big – that being Splat the Cat. Created by the British author and illustrator Rob Scotton, Splat became so popular that over 5 million copies of the books in the series have already been sold around the world and they continue being in print. The secret of Splat’s popularity lies in the fact that kids identify with him right off the bat! Rob Scotton’s talent for comic story-telling and pictures, which practically pop off the page make it for an entertaining read for adults not just the kids. In 2013, the Halloween-themed title “Splat the Cat: What was That?” even made The New York Times Best Seller List!
In “Merry Christmas, Splat” the fabulous Cat writes to Santa. An uncomplicated request simply reads: “Dear Santa, Can I please have a really big present for Christmas? Thank you, Splat. PS I have been a very good cat”. Having written it Splat starts having his doubts: has he indeed been a very good cat? In an attempt to make the final impression on Santa Splat decides to rev up his good deeds score by making himself helpful around the house. “MOM!”, cries Splat “I’m going to help you get everything ready for Christmas!” The look on mother’s face at hearing this is priceless! I can identify with it as quickly as kids do with Splat himself. “Oh dear!” is all she can manage anticipating, from experience, Splat’s best intentions go awfully pear shape. A hilarious sequence of those occurrences follows but it all ends well eventually and Splat gets his BIG present on Christmas morning. After all, Santa thought that Splat has been a good cat and isn’t it all that matters!
